VFW Codec for virtualdub

If you're getting an error when trying to load DV avi video into Virtualdub, or some other video editing software, you probably need something like the Panasonic DV VFW codec (works for Sony DV video as well it seems!)
Panasonic DV VFW Codec

THNX
Hi, i have the problem when i am trying to load video. I have instaled this codec, but my problem is not solved :(
What sort of video camera do you have?
Are you attempting to load your DV video into Virtualdub as I described above?
I dont know if my progress is correct. I need edit AVI video in Virtualdub, and if I select: File - Open video file, so it give me back this error:
http://www.imagehosting.us/index.php?action=show&ident=1881066
So I have supposed that i need this codec. Do I need something else?
This codec should fix that error - I'm pretty sure that was the message I was getting prior to installing this.
So you installed the codec, rebooted your computer, and then tried opening it in Virtualdub again? I think that was all I had to do to be able to load my DV video for editing.
After doing a bit of googling, everyone seemed to say that you need at least Divx 5 codec installed as well (they're up to version 6 now)
You might like to try installing that as well? (I'd just install the Divx 6 community codec, and forget about the Pro Trial one which is included in the download).
Then reboot your pc, and try loading your video once more into Virtualdub...
Download DivX codec here
Okej, now it is allright. Thank you very much for your help.
Cool, glad its all sorted for ya.
It'll probably help a bunch of the rest of the many visitors to this page also I'd imagine
No, I am really "happy" that you were willing to help me. THX again :)
I've downloaded this but when i tried to load a XVID-AVI file, virtual dub did load it but said: VideoSourceAvi error: The source image format is not acceptable. (error code -2)
Does anyone know what the problem is?
Nothing springs to mind... you do have the actual Xvid codec installed?
Works great with Panasonic DV VFW codec.
THanks a lot. It will save lots of time and money using VD instead of Adobe Premiere to encode my media.
It gives me the error code:
"Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'XVID' (unknown)
VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable."
and I already installed some codecs that I thought were going to work.
Have you installed the Xvid codec, as well as the VFW codec? That should work once you've done that...
Try a program called AVI FourCC Changer (available free at http://www.inmatrix.com/files/other_download.shtml) which allows you to change the header information from xvid to divx which, in turn, makes the avi acceptable to Virtual Dub
Hey, sorry I must not be getting something. Have VDUB because it did not work I downloaded Divx now what? I just want to merge to AVI files. how do I use Divx to work with VDUB?? Please someone one help me.
What error are you seeing when you try and load your AVI files?
install koepie's XVID codecs and try again.
koepie sucked for me since it didn't work for me but the Four CC change thing did the trick.
Trying to append 9 youtubes parts into one ...
Hey I have been trying to extract the audio part from an AVI and I am using this program...but it still comes up as "Couldn't locate decompressor for format MP42". I know I need the VFW codec which I have downloaded and installed. Why won't it work?
Lots of different suggestions when you google that MP42 error - let us know whether any of those suggestions work?
so i had that same mp42 error and i just installed this codec
here now it plays the file fine.
Thanks I was able to open the files on virtualdub now.. only problem now is when I append the avi files is they dont have the same data rate.. lol
Hi,
I've had the same problem while loading some videos and i get a codec error. I tried installing the codec but still same problem. But i found an alternate (kinda roundabout) way to get round this. Its helpful even if u cant find the codec or cant install it etc..
If its an avi, convert it to an mpeg-I (mpeg-II should work too i guess but tried that only once. mpeg-I hasnt failed me so far)
I use Any Video Converter to do this.
vdub should open the mpeg-I version without problems
do whatever you wanna do with the vid, compress, etc as u want to
use the save as avi to save it
the file will be a lot huger than the original one.
take it back to the converter and convert to avi.
now its smaller, pretty much the same size it used to be.
note: i dont know why u can actually convert it again to avi and shrink the file even after 'saving as avi' but i found quite by accident that it works...
I also found that after reconverting it to avi, i can still open it in vdub without problems n compress it further. for some reason this time there doesnt seem to be any error while loading the file. maybe this has to do with what converter u use.
sorry for being so ambiguous but im pretty much a newbie at this and dont know squat about the technical stuff...
just thought i'd share this little trick
In the VDUBMOD files there is a file called codecs
Here is a sample of the file. (it is actually much larger than this)
My question is what does this mean? Does this mean that these codecs are already installed?
How do I manually install a codec?

I don't think it includes all those codecs - I think its basically a database of the file extensions and the full codec names? Perhaps so it can prompt the user for the full name when loading is attempted?
I'm hardly a pro and don't need ultimate quality video and the prospect of installing all those codecs when I don't really know what they are or do was daunting but I tried your solution to convert to MPEG 1 via Any Video Converter and don't have to worry anymore - works great.
Many thanks, am now happily joining up You Tube downloads and converting back to AVI. Will find lots more to do with the method I'm sure.
Now, if I could just figure out why Windows Media Player has stopped showing me the mini pictures of what Video I have since I installed the Service Pack this week I'd be happy. Still, VLC works well ....
Thanks again
John
Glad to be of help John
just a quick thanx for all the help above ;)
After hours of searching and using programs that just were not working for me this solved the problem. Thanks a ton!!!
Some Waveform audio files can't be played on my windows media player, it says I need a Ogg Vorbis Mode 2 (6750), what does that mean? and where do I get the download?
Maybe try installing this to get proper OGG Vorbis support in windows media player? Not certain, but thats what I'd try...
